Thai alphabet PDF: three free charts to print
These are three free charts, one A4 page each: the Thai alphabet with all 44 consonants, the tone rules with a real word in every cell, and the vowels as short and long pairs. They are made from the same data as the charts on this site. Download a PDF to print, or open the print view in your browser. No email address is needed.

The alphabet chart
All 44 consonants in the order every Thai chart uses, drawn with their loops and coloured by class. Each shows its name, what it means and how it sounds at the start and at the end of a syllable.

The tone rules chart
The rule table on one page. The 5 rows are the syllable types and tone marks, the 3 columns are the consonant classes, and each of the 15 cells holds the tone and a real word for it.

The vowels chart
12 pairs of short and long vowels, 24 forms in all. Each shows where it is written, what it does when a final consonant closes the syllable, and an example word.

Practise the tone rules on paper
A free practice pack goes with the tone chart: 60 syllables to work out in 4 rounds of 15, and an answer key that gives the reason for each one.
How to use the charts
- Print on A4, at 100% and in colour. The class colours carry meaning, and a grey print loses them.
- Keep the alphabet chart next to the first lesson, which is free, and look each letter up as you meet it.
- A PDF can't speak. The alphabet chart on the site plays every letter, and the tone rules chart plays the word in each cell.
- The letters are drawn with their loops, as in textbooks. Many signs use a form without loops, which is the same letter.
How the three charts fit together
A consonant has a class, the class and the vowel length decide the tone, and the vowel is written around the consonant. The page about the Thai script explains how the pieces fit together, and the Thai vowel chart has the short and long pairs with audio.
